Privacy Policy

Overview

Turns Out (“we”, “our”, or “us”) is a travel coordination app that lets you share future travel plans with friends. This privacy policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that data.

We believe in collecting only the data necessary to provide the service and being transparent about how it's used. We do not sell your personal data to third parties.

Data we collect

Account information

When you create an account, we collect your name, email address, username, and password. You may optionally provide a phone number, Instagram handle, bio, and profile photo.

Travel plans

When you create a trip, we store the destination, dates, notes, visibility settings, and any photos you upload. This is the core data that powers the app.

Social connections

We store your friend connections, group memberships, trip sharing preferences, and interactions (reactions, comments, @mentions).

Contact data

If you use the “Find friends from contacts” feature, phone numbers from your contacts are sent to our server to check for matches. We do not store your contact list — numbers are checked in real-time and discarded. Only you can initiate this check, and it requires an explicit action.

Usage data

We collect standard web analytics data (page views, device type, browser) through our hosting provider to understand how the app is used and improve performance.

How we use your data

• To provide the service: showing your trips to friends you've chosen, detecting overlaps, delivering notifications
• To enable social features: friend connections, group sharing, reactions, comments, @mentions
• To generate your public profile page (only data you've opted to show)
• To improve the app and fix bugs
• To send you notifications about activity on your trips (friend requests, reactions, comments, overlaps)

We do not use your data for advertising, sell it to third parties, or share it with data brokers.

Visibility and sharing

You control who sees each trip through visibility settings:

• Private: Only you can see it
• Friends: Visible to your accepted friend connections
• Group: Visible to members of a specific group you've created
• Public: Accessible via a shareable link — no account required to view

New trips default to “All friends” visibility. You can change this at any time.

Third-party services

We use the following third-party services to operate the app:

• Supabase: Database hosting and user authentication (stores your data securely)
• Vercel: Application hosting and deployment
• Mapbox: Map display for the trip map view (receives destination coordinates, not personal data)
• Unsplash: Stock photos for trip cards (no personal data shared)

Each service has its own privacy policy and processes data according to their terms.

Data security

Your data is stored in Supabase's infrastructure with encryption at rest and in transit. Authentication is handled via industry-standard practices (hashed passwords, secure sessions). We use row-level security policies to ensure users can only access data they're authorized to see.

Your rights

You have the right to:

• Access your data through your profile and trip history
• Edit or delete any trip, comment, reaction, or profile information at any time
• Control visibility of your contact information (email, phone, Instagram) on your public profile
• Delete your account — contact us and we will remove all your data
• Opt out of phone number discovery at any time via your profile settings

Data retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will remove your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it by law.

Children's privacy

Turns Out is not intended for users under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify users through the app. The “last updated” date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
